The Strand Theatre Preservation Society

The Strand Theatre Preservation Society was incorporated on December 4, 2000, for the purpose of restoring the historic Strand Theatre to its original grandeur and providing Moundsville and the surrounding areas with a facility to house all expressions of the arts. The Society has pledged to provide a state of the art facility while maintaining the integrity of this building so rich in history.

Mission:  Restore the Strand – Build the Arts!

Society Structure:

  • 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization incorporated on December 4, 2000.
  • 14 member volunteer Board of Directors.
  • Eight sub-committees:  Fund Raising, Public Relations, Capital Fund, Design, Construction & Architecture, Grant Writing, History, Performing Arts.
  • Over 300 volunteer committee members.

History of the Building:

  • Built in 1920 by MA Sybert as a Vaudeville Theater – Total cost:  $100,000.
  • First steel-beam structure built in Marshall County with a seating capacity of 1,200.
  • Between 1920 and 1996, the theater was dark only seven years – from 1969 to 1976. 

History of the Preservation Society:

  • 2001 – purchased the theater from the Bob Munn family using HUD money secured by Congressman Alan Mollohan.
  • Two-fold purpose:  Enhance the Quality of Life Through the Arts and Provide Economic Revitalization. 
  • 2005 – Economic Impact Study conducted by West Liberty State College with the following results:
     
    1. The Strand will support 34 new full-time positions within the community.
    2. Be a year-round catalyst for economic development and downtown revitalization.
    1. Enhance the quality of life in the region.
    2. Direct financial impact – audience members will inject $800,000 to $1,000,000 annually into our economy.

 How Far Have We Come?
 

  • Built a successful arts program with the productions of Annie, The Sound of Music, Our Town, Visitors, Into the Woods, and Ah! Wilderness.
  • Produced a Children’s Chorus, Variety Show, Dinner Theaters, Murder Mystery Dinner Theater, Storytelling Festival, and Children’s Theater Workshops.
  • Secured the “envelope” of the theater: 
    • New roof
    • Brick cleaned and re-pointed
    • Box gutters and rainwater leaders repaired
    • Repair of windows and doors
    • Repair and painting of metal cornices
    • The addition of a new marquee and the repair of the exterior stairs

Financial Facts:

  • The restoration of the Strand Theatre is a five-phased, $3.3 million project.
  • Funding has been secured for Phase I and a portion of Phase II completing the exterior and allowing work to move inside.
  • Over $50,000 in community, corporate, and private donations have been realized.
  • Fundraising efforts have garnered over $60,000.
  • Productions of the Performing Arts Committee have grossed over $35,000.
  • Successfully pursued grant funding totaling over $930,000.
