Audition Information

The Strand Theatre announces auditions for the musical Nunsense.

Nunsense is the hilarious musical farce about a convent of Nuns staging a fundraiser to enable them to bury the last four nuns of their order who died of botulism in an unfortunate convent cooking accident (and who are temporarily being stored in the freezer!). The Little Sisters of Hoboken (well, what's left of them) put on this riotous revue packed with hilarious, show-stopping song and dance numbers, and always proves to be a crowd favorite.

Nunsense will be presented February 21, 2025, at 7:00pm, and February 22, 2025, at 2:00pm. Shelby Garrett will direct, Michael Murphy will serve as music director, Renee Storm will serve as choreographer, and Meta Lasch will serve as technical director.

Auditions will be held Tuesday, January 7, at 6:00pm at the Strand. Please prepare 16-32 bars of a song from either a musical or an upbeat pop song. An accompanist will be provided. Auditions will also consist of cold reads from the script as well as a dance combo, so wear comfortable shoes you can move in. If necessary, callbacks will take place on Wednesday, January 8, at 6:00pm. Audition ages are 18 and older.

Rehearsals will begin the week of January 13 and run Tuesday-Thursday evenings for approximately three hours per rehearsal. A complete schedule will be created following auditions and distributed at the first rehearsal.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS (5 FEMALE LEADS)

Sister Mary Regina (Mother Superior) - A feisty, Sophie Tucker-type who can't resist the spotlight. The head of the convent, she is respected greatly by the sisters. While she is strict, she has a hard time keeping the craziness of the convent at bay. She keeps her guard up in front of the nuns, but has an extroverted side. Role requires some very physical humor. The character may be played with an Irish accent. Voice part: Mezzo Belt. Dance: musical theatre singer choreography.

Sister Mary Hubert (Mistress of Novices) - Hubert is in charge of novices, but fancies herself a Mother Superior and is constant competition with Mary Regina. She exudes maternal wisdom to novices, but also likes to let loose. Voice part: Mezzo Belt. Dance: musical theatre singer choreography and tap.

Sister Robert Anne - Once a child delinquent herself, this rough tough nun is a jokester and constantly challenging authority. She speaks with a thick Brooklyn accent and constantly displays her lack of refinement. Vocal part: Mostly Mezzo Belt - she has a few moments with a sweet soprano tonality. Dance: musical theatre singer choreography and tap.

Sister Mary Amnesia - As the name suggests, she has lost her memory and does not know who she is except that she is a nun. She is spacey and incoherent, often slipping into displays inappropriate for a nun. Must be able to sing in classical and country styles. Vocal part: Soprano Belt. Dance: musical theatre singer choreography and tap. Extra: puppetry and ventriloquism a plus.

Sister Mary Leo - Leo is the novice nun who has entered the convent with the firm desire to become the first nun ballerina. Still learning the way and coming to terms with her decision to give up "civilian" life, she deems herself quite the ballerina and displays her talents through much of the show. She is easily swayed to join in mischief. Vocal part: Soprano. Dance: musical theatre singer choreography, tap and pointe ballet.
